Hungarian Citizenship
Full European Status
The highest stage of the immigration journey. Become a full citizen of the European Union, gain the right to vote and hold one of the world's most powerful passports. We accompany you through every step of the naturalisation procedure, from application to the ceremonial oath.
The Naturalisation Process: In Detail
Not an Automatic Right, but State Recognition.
Obtaining Hungarian citizenship (naturalisation) is fundamentally different from any other permit type. Whilst residence permits must be issued by the authority when conditions are met, the granting of citizenship is a discretionary power of the Head of State (President of the Republic).
Proving Integration The legislature's aim is that citizenship be granted only to those who have demonstrated integration into Hungarian society. This rests on three pillars:
-
Continuous Residence: Many years of uninterrupted stay in Hungary.
-
Livelihood and Housing: Stable financial circumstances, clean criminal record.
-
Language Proficiency: The most critical requirement. The applicant must pass an exam in Hungarian language and constitutional fundamentals (unless exempt).
Dual Citizenship Hungary recognises the institution of dual (or multiple) citizenship. Upon naturalisation, you are not required to renounce your original citizenship (unless the laws of your country of origin stipulate otherwise). You keep your roots whilst gaining a new homeland.
Basic Conditions for Naturalisation
8 years
As a general rule, 8 years of continuous residence is required. (For spouses or by birth, this may be reduced to 3–5 years).
1. Waiting Period
Constitutional Knowledge
An exam in Hungarian covering the structure of government, history and literature (may be waived above a certain age or with a qualifying qualification).
2. Exam Requirement
Top 10 in the World
The Hungarian passport grants visa-free travel to the USA, Canada and the majority of countries worldwide.
3. Passport Strength
Zero Tolerance
Rigorous national security background check. No criminal proceedings may be ongoing against you.
4. Clean Criminal Record
Who Is It Available To?
Citizenship is for those who have made a permanent commitment to Hungary.
-
Long-term Residents: Those who have been living here for at least 8 years with immigrant or settled status.
-
Spouses: In the case of marriage to a Hungarian citizen, the waiting period is reduced (down to 3 years where there are shared children).
-
Descendants: Those whose ancestors were Hungarian citizens (simplified naturalisation).
The role of First Immigration: The procedure is not only a legal but also a "cultural" examination. We do not merely compile the documents with precision — we also assist with preparation: organising mock exams, connecting you with a language tutor and coaching you for the personal interview with the authorities, so that your language proficiency makes a convincing impression.
The Privileges of Citizenship
-
EU Passport: Freedom of movement, residence and employment in any EU member state (not just Hungary).
-
Right to Vote: You can influence the future of the country and the EU through elections.
-
Diplomatic Protection: During stays abroad, you are entitled to Hungarian (and EU) consular protection.
-
Inheritable Status: Your children will automatically become Hungarian citizens, wherever in the world they are born.
-
Visa-Free Travel: Entry to the USA (ESTA), Canada and Australia without visa processing.
The Road to the Oath
Assessing the Prospects
We verify the period of residence and clean criminal record. More importantly, in a brief conversation we assess your level of Hungarian and honestly tell you whether it is sufficient for the exam or whether preparation is needed.
The Learning Phase
We assist with registering for the exam. The exam is conducted in Hungarian and covers the history, literature and constitution of Hungary. (In certain cases, for example above the age of 60 or with a Hungarian qualification, you may be exempt).
Personal Case Management
The application is submitted at the Government Service Window or before the Registrar. Language ability matters here: you must communicate with the officer in Hungarian. We will be there as your support.
The Waiting Period
This is the longest stage (potentially 1–2 years). The authorities carry out a full background check on the applicant. The final decision is signed by the President of the Republic.
The Ceremonial Moment
Following a successful decision, you take the ceremonial citizenship oath before the Mayor. After this, you may immediately apply for your Hungarian passport and identity card.
Questions About Naturalisation
Q1: What level of Hungarian is required? The expectation is conversational level. Simply understanding "kitchen Hungarian" is not enough — you must be able to handle matters independently and understand the exam questions. The exam consists of written and oral sections.
Q2: Can citizenship be purchased through investment? No. The Guest Investor Programme (GIP) grants a residence permit, not citizenship. Citizenship always requires a defined period of residence and language proficiency. There is no "back door".
Q3: How long does the procedure take? The citizenship procedure is not swift. From the submission of the application, a decision takes an average of 12–18 months, though this varies by individual.
Q4: Will my children receive citizenship together with me? Yes. Minor children may be naturalised together with the parent; they generally do not need to sit a separate exam (depending on age) — their cases are assessed jointly with the parent's application.
