The White Card Programme: In Detail
The Legal Framework for Modern Employment in Hungary
The White Card is a special residence permit type introduced in 2022 as Hungary's response to changes in the global labour market. The legal purpose of the programme is to provide a legal status of residence for third-country nationals who perform their work without geographical constraints, using advanced digital technology.
The Nature of the Legal Relationship This permit is fundamentally different from traditional work permits. The holder of a White Card may not enter the Hungarian labour market. This means they cannot enter into an employment relationship with a company registered in Hungary, and may not perform commercial activities for Hungarian clients. The card entitles the holder solely to reside in Hungary, whilst their economic activity and source of income remain entirely abroad.
The "Advanced Digital Technology" Requirement The key element of the statutory definition is technology. The applicant must credibly demonstrate that their work can by its nature be performed from anywhere, requiring only an internet connection and computing equipment (laptop, software, online platforms). This permit therefore does not apply to "remote work" that does not require physical presence but does require other physical equipment (e.g. inventory management).
Income Stability One of the most stringent conditions of the programme is demonstrating financial independence. The authority requires a regular, verifiable minimum monthly net income of EUR 3,000, which must have been continuous throughout the preceding 6 months prior to application and for the duration of the stay.

Who Is the White Card Ideal For?
The White Card was created specifically for third-country nationals who work remotely using advanced digital technology — for a company based outside Hungary or for their own foreign business.
It is the ideal choice if you are an IT professional, consultant or creative freelancer who wishes to enjoy the stability of the European Union and Budapest's outstanding quality of life, without giving up your global career.
The role of First Immigration: Despite appearing straightforward, applying for the White Card is subject to strict income verification and insurance requirements. Our experts will help you demonstrate the remote nature of your work to the authorities, prepare the necessary bank and employer documentation, and ensure your application meets all legal requirements first time.

How We Help with Your Move
Verifying the EUR 3,000 Rule
The most important entry threshold is income. We verify that a minimum monthly income of EUR 3,000 (or equivalent in another currency) has been demonstrably received over the past 6 months and will be secured going forward.
Demonstrating "Digital Nomad" Status
We help obtain and (where necessary) translate the foreign employer's letter confirming that your work can be performed remotely, including from Hungary. This is the cornerstone of the application.
Establishing the Required Background
The White Card requires "comprehensive" health insurance — travel insurance is not sufficient. Through our partner network, we help you arrange the right package and organise proof of accommodation.
Personal Submission with Expert Backing
We prepare you for the consulate or VFS interview. Since your personal profile and work are central, it is important that you know precisely how to present your activity to the authority.
1+1 Year Planning
In the event of a successful decision, we assist with collecting the card. Important to note: the White Card is issued for 1 year, extendable once by a further year. We monitor the deadlines on your behalf.
Questions About the White Card
Q1: Can I work for Hungarian companies with the White Card? No. This is the most important rule. The White Card explicitly prohibits working for a Hungarian employer or holding a stake in a Hungarian profit-making enterprise. You may only invoice foreign clients or be employed by a foreign company.
Q2: Can I bring my family (spouse, children)? Unlike other permit types, the White Card does not provide an automatic right to family reunification. Family members must apply on their own separate grounds. If family reunification is a priority, we recommend exploring our Guest Investor or Corporate programmes.
Q3: How much income do I need to demonstrate? The legislation prescribes a minimum regular net monthly income of EUR 3,000. This must be substantiated by bank statements and an employer's letter covering the past 6 months.
Q4: How long may I stay? The White Card is issued for a maximum of 1 year, extendable once by a further year. You may therefore reside in Hungary on this type for a maximum total of 2 years. After this, you must switch to a different type of permit if you wish to remain.
