The Hungarian Card Programme: In Detail
Recognising Exceptional Expertise and Talent
The Hungarian Card is a gap-filling legal instrument, created by the legislature to cover "grey zones" and attract outstanding talents. Legally, this permit is a more flexible alternative to the "Highly Qualified" category — one that is tied not exclusively to a degree, but to professional excellence.
Eligible Applicants The law builds this permit type on three main pillars. First, it opens opportunities for specialists with the highest professional qualifications (who are not opting for the EU Blue Card). Second — and most importantly — it opens the door for professional athletes and coaches, as well as performing artists and film industry professionals. In their case, the absence of a degree is compensated by a contract with a sports organisation or documentation of artistic activity.
Exceptional Validity Period In the interest of stability, the Hungarian Card can be issued for an exceptionally long duration. Whilst standard permits are typically issued for 2 years, the Hungarian Card may — at the authority's discretion — be granted for up to 3 years, periodically extendable by a further 3 years.
Exemptions Similarly to the National Card, Hungarian Card holders are exempt from the labour market test. This means the employer is not required to notify the Government Office of a workforce demand — submitting documents proving professional suitability is sufficient.

Who Is the Hungarian Card Ideal For?
The Hungarian Card is a gap-filling permit type, targeting talents who excel in specialised fields. It is available to three main groups:
-
Professional Athletes and Coaches: Those under contract with a Hungarian sports organisation.
-
Performing Artists and Film Industry: actors, film production professionals.
-
Holders of Higher Professional Qualifications: Professionals with a degree who, for various reasons, are not applying for the EU Blue Card (e.g. due to the nature of the role).
The role of First Immigration: Because this category is exceptionally diverse, demonstrating eligibility to the authorities is also complex. We help you classify your activity precisely, obtain the necessary sports federation or professional confirmations, and compile a "labelled" application that guarantees swift processing.
Strategic Advantages
-
Exceptional Validity: The Hungarian Card can be issued for up to 3 years, periodically extendable by a further 3 years (longer than the standard 2-year average).
-
No Labour Market Test: In most cases you are exempt from the lengthy labour market assessment, making processing weeks faster.
-
Family Reunification: Your spouse and children may join you in Hungary.
-
Flexible Qualification Requirements: A university degree is not always required (e.g. for athletes and artists, professional track record is what counts).
-
Freedom of Movement: You are entitled to free movement within the Schengen Area.
How the Process Works
Sport, Culture or Profession?
As a first step, we precisely identify which grounds for residency you qualify for. This is critical, because the authority requires entirely different documents for an athlete compared to an engineer.
Demonstrating Talent
We help obtain the specialist attachments: sports federation confirmation, film industry authority certificate or degree authentication. These are the foundation of a successful application.
Stabilising the Legal Foundation
We verify that the Hungarian letter of engagement or employment contract fully complies with immigration law. We compile an organised housing documentation package.
Personal Submission with Support
We book the appointment and prepare you for the personal submission. Since the Hungarian Card carries prestige value, professional conduct before the authority is important — and that is exactly what we help you achieve.
Long-term Security
Following a positive decision, we assist with collecting the document. Since this card can be issued for up to 3 years, we also help with the administrative aspects of establishing long-term residency in Hungary (accommodation confirmation, tax identification).
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
Q1: I am an athlete but do not have a degree. Can I apply? Yes, absolutely. For professional athletes and coaches, what counts is not the qualification but the contract with a sports organisation and the sports federation confirmation.
Q2: How does this differ from the EU Blue Card? The main difference lies in the target group and flexibility. Whilst the Blue Card is strictly aimed at degree holders in a high salary bracket, the Hungarian Card is more open to the cultural and sports sector and in certain cases offers a longer (3-year) validity.
Q3: Can I change employer (or club) with this card? Yes, it is possible. The Hungarian Card is tied to a specific employer (or club), but the change can be handled through a simplified procedure without leaving the country. Our experts coordinate the transition with the Immigration Office.
Q4: Can my family come with me? Yes. As a holder of the Hungarian Card, you are entitled to family reunification. Your spouse and minor children may also obtain a residence permit, provided you can demonstrate livelihood and accommodation for the family.
